Sponsor your parents or grandparents

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program is part of Canada's commitment to family reunification under the Family class immigration category. It allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents to also live in Canada.

If the application is successful, the sponsored parents and grandparents will become permanent residents of Canada, with all the benefits that come with it. This includes the right to live and work in Canada, as well as access to health care and other services. Eventually, sponsored parents and grandparents may also become Canadian citizens.

Eligibility Requirements for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

To be eligible in the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship, both the sponsor (Canadian citizen or permanent resident) and sponsored person(s) (parents or grandparents) must have met certain eligibility requirements:

Sponsor must :

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

  • Show that they can financially support their family by meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) depending on their family unit.

  • The sponsor and the sponsored person(s) must sign a sponsorship agreement.
a) Pledges the sponsor to provide financial support to the sponsored person(s) and any other eligible relatives accompanying them for a period of three to 20 years. This depends on their age and relationship to the sponsor, beginning on the date they become a permanent resident.

b) States that the parents or grandparents becoming permanent residents will make every effort to support themselves.

If you are living in Quebec and want to sponsor a child,parent, grandparent note that you must also meet Quebec’s immigration sponsorship requirements in addition to the requirements listed.
